The World Allergy Organization (WAO) published that globally, 10 – 40 % of people are affected by allergies. Many are the benefits and pleasures of having these fluffy clouds on your bed. So, if you’re still thinking about giving the eco-friendly bamboo sheet sets a chance, let me help you by providing a couple of solid reasons why you should do it.

Breathable

Bamboo is one of the most breathable natural fabrics in the world, together with cotton, silk and merino wool. With its minimal thread count, this material is the perfect match for the kid’s nursery and bedroom. Because of this, bamboo sheets allow the flow of air during the night, releasing excess heat and reducing moisture which is the perfect ground for dust mites. This way, the sleeper stays fresh, cool and comfortable.

Thermo-Regulating

A great number of people all over the world are hot sleepers, and those summer nights can be a torture to fall asleep. This is just one more reason to buy bamboo sheets. Its microscopic holes make sure that there is ventilation and a steady temperature. Additionally, the microscopic holes create a kind of insulation. When the temperature outside the blanket drops, they keep warm air between your body and the blanket, providing a balanced good night sleep. So, say goodbye to overheating and enjoy every night in your bed.

Durable

Bamboo sheets are created by stretching the fibres inside the bamboo. But they are stretched across the entire length, instead of shorter pieces being intertwined together. In contrast to being soft and smooth, this makes the fabric far more durable, stronger, and has a considerably lower chance of tearing when compared to other fibres. If washed and handled with care, these sheets can last much longer than conventional bedsheets.

Hypoallergenic

Bamboo by nature is quite mild and gentle. It can be grown without any pesticides or fungicides, and so become hypoallergenic and odourless to some extent. Because of this, and his antimicrobial agent called bamboo-kun, bamboo is perfect for people with sensitive skin and people prone to allergies. They no longer need to worry about dust mites, rashes, dermatitis, or any kind of allergic reaction.

Eco-Friendly

In the plant world, bamboo is probably one of the most self-sufficient, independent plants there are. It’s very low maintenance, does not require any pesticides and it’s water efficient. When it comes to replanting it gets even better. The average life of one cane is seven to ten years, so you don’t have to worry about replanting every year. According to the Guinness World Record, it is also the fastest-growing plant in the world and can grow up to 91 cm a day, with a rate of 0.00003km/h. Harvesting it can be practical because you just need to cut it and not pull it from the root.

Antibacterial

Bamboo sheets are known for their antibacterial properties. The decrease of moisture prevents the continuous growth of bacteria and microbes, together with the help of the antimicrobial agent bamboo-kun. This means that it repels odour, which leads to cleaner sheets and cleaner skin. Also, in the production of organic bamboo bedding, no chemicals or dyes are used, so you won’t get any unwanted and unexpected skin reactions like rashes, eczema, allergies, or suffering from respiratory distress and difficulties.

Fade-Resistant

Just like any other material, bamboo sheets are not immune to stains. But on the other hand, they are very stern when it comes to discolouration. Compared to cotton, bamboo sheets are nonabsorbent. When we sweat at night cotton just absorbs everything. And because we sweat body oils, they get into the fabric and fade it. While other materials may experience discolouration, bamboo sheets will keep their colour for years to come, making them look as good as new in the next 10 years.

Maintenance and Durability

As some materials require special care and maintenance, so does bamboo. To make sure that your bamboo sheets last for the longest possible time, it’s essential to take good care of them. This includes proper washing, drying and storing.

The first thing to know about washing is to avoid any kind of detergent that contains benzoyl peroxide or alpha hydroxy acids. These chemicals are strong and can cause discolouration of sensitive materials. The other thing to avoid is fabric softener and bleach products. Why avoid fabric softeners? Because bamboo sheets are already very soft on their own, and with the various chemicals in fabric softeners these days, there is a great chance that you will ruin or discolour your sheets.

You can always use your washing machine to clean these sheets. Just make sure that you do it at lower temperatures, somewhere between cold and warm. This is advised because a hot wash may shrink them. You can wash them once a week or once every two weeks, depending on your personal preferences. And when you do, make sure you use a mild liquid detergent, or if you must use a powder detergent, make sure you dissolve it before putting it in the washing machine.

The same thing applies when it comes to drying. Do it as gentle as possible. The most recommended method of drying for bamboo sheets is air-drying. A completely natural way, using the sun and the wind to extract the moisture from them. But if you can, avoid drying them in direct sunlight.  If you, by any chance, must use the dryer, make sure to do it on the lowest setting and at the least amount of time possible.

By following all of the above, you are making sure that your sheets will last as long as possible, up to 10 years.

So don’t wait any longer. Go out and choose your favourite bamboo sheets to experience all of the benefits they provide. Do your research, educate yourself if you’re not familiar with this type of material, and give it a try.
