Are you finally ready to invest in your favourite instrument? If the answer is yes, there are some things you should know before making a purchase. Cellos come in many varieties and can have different properties. It’s important that you familiarise yourself with the details and then find the right instrument for your skill level and music taste.

Types of Cellos

source: pinterest.com

Acoustic

This is a traditional cello instrument that makes sounds with its strings and the resonating body. It’s completely free of any electronics or electronic amplifiers. In fact, there’s no artificial amplification at all. It’s usually made of some type of wood and can be used in a variety of genres, varying from folk to classical music.

Carbon Fibre

This type of instrument is a modernised version of the traditional woodwork. It’s made out of a combination of carbon fibre and either plastic or resin. This beautifully designed instrument is lightweight, durable and very strong. The combination of these three positive features is what makes it suitable for children and musicians with limited strength. It’s also practical for people who often have outdoor performances.

Electric

The electric cello type is another modernised version. It has an electric pickup and amplifier. These electric connections mean that this instrument should be plugged in an amplifier to get the amplified sound. A PA system is another amplifying option. This is not an option that’s often recommended to beginners because it’s difficult to have it as your first instrument.

5-String

You probably know by now that these instruments have 4 strings as a standard setting. However, there’s also a 5-string version. You can also find it under the name pomposa. It has a low tonal range, just like the traditional version. The extra string is there to give it a higher and expanded tonal range.

Baroque

The baroque version of this instrument is inspired from the version the musicians played in the baroque period. It usually has a lower pitch than the others, and the strings are made of guts. You’ll often see it performing in orchestras and individual who are performing Baroque music.

Small-Scale

The small-scale version includes the ¾ and ½ cellos. The ¾ one is smaller than the traditional version and it’s usually used by children or shorter adults. The ½ one is smaller and the first choice for many children musicians and beginners.

Full-Scale

This cello is the most common of them all. It has all 4 strings: C, G, D, and A. It’s mostly used by professionals. In many cases, the front and the back are made of different woods and it’s lacquer-coated.

What to Consider when Buying?

Material

source: pinterest.com

Creating these instruments involves a complex process that includes a lot of woodworking and different techniques. The neck, back, and sides are usually made of the same material. Putting the body together takes a lot of carving and shaping of the wood. There are several types of woods used to make it.

Basswood is a very popular choice because it’s very soft and easy to work with. It’s very lightweight and has a distinctive light almost pale colour. The thick, black colour and long-lasting form retention of ebony make it a highly valued hardwood. Many implement this wood for the making of the stringed instruments to make their tuning pegs and fingerboards.

Generally speaking, maple is the preferred wood used on a neck, back, and sides. This wood is renowned for its beauty, strength, and stability. Flamed and birds-eye maple are the most commonly used varieties. Poplar is also a nice option because it’s light and soft. However, because it lacks resonance, it’s not the first choice.

Spruce is another popular material, especially for the soundboard. It’s strong, has good vibrations, and makes rich and resonant sounds. Carbon fibre is used to make the modern version of this instrument. It’s an alternative material chosen because it’s durable and resistant to humidity and temperature fluctuations.

Size

The cello is the second largest instrument in the big string family, but it still comes in several sizes. This means you can find a fit no matter your size. Most people who are taller than 150 cm can play a full-sized version. There are smaller options available if you’re a child or an adult shorter than 150 cm.

People shorter than 130 cm are well-suited for the ¾ size and others who are smaller than that will work perfectly with the ½ version. Finding the right size is crucial. It’ll determine your level of comfort and how much progress you make.

Rent or Buy

Is it better to rent, or buy a cello instrument? This is a common question beginners have. If you need the instrument for a child, then there are music services and schools that will allow you to rent or borrow it. However, if you’re an adult who has private lessons with a teacher, it’s most likely that you’ll need to buy the instrument. When you decide to buy, make sure it comes from a reliable brand, one with lots of experience and many satisfied customers.

Accessories

Strings

When you get the instrument, it should already come with strings of its own. But it’s a good idea to always have a spare set with you wherever you go. Strings can snap, and you don’t want your performance to be ruined just because you don’t have a spare. The most common string types are Kevlar and Perlon. They’re synthetic and respond rapidly. Other string varieties can be made of sheep gut wrapped in metal.

Rosin

Rosin is a must-have accessory for every cellist. It helps you by giving you more grip for the bow on the strings. Rosins come from different trees and can have different colours, smells, and make different sounds. The cello version is often dark red.

Music Stand

When you start playing from sheet music, this will be an essential accessory. It’s usually made of metal and it’s very adjustable. It’s also lightweight so you can take it with you anywhere you go. Some of them even come in their own carry bag.

Cello Case

The majority of these instruments come with their own case. But if the one you buy doesn’t, you should definitely buy one separately. The case is there to protect the instrument from bumps and damage. There are soft and hard-shell cases, both with their pros and cons. Choose the one that fits your instrument perfectly and provides maximum protection.

If you’re new to the drumming world and you want to invest in an electric version, there are a few things you should know. Electric drums are an affordable and practical instrument for everyone who wants to practice drums at home. They make less ambient noise and take up less space. With plenty of other advantages, they’re the perfect investment for any beginner drummer.

Parts of the Drum Kit

Drum and Cymbal Stands

Some types of drums and cymbals have stands of their own. Because of how adjustable they are, you can easily position the parts of the kit as you like. You’ll be much more comfortable playing the drums with this type of setting. Racks are practical in case the kit has multiple cymbals and drums. You can easily organise them as you see fit.

Cymbals

You can find cymbals in three different varieties, crash, ride and hi-hats. Crash cymbals are mainly used to accent songs. Ride cymbals are made to create bell-like tones and they’re usually larger. Finally, the hi-hats are smaller and are activated with a foot pedal. Once you hit the pedal, they strike each other and make a sound. You can also play them with sticks.

Snare and Tom Drums

source: pinterest.com

The snare drum is the one you’ll notice first because of its size. It’s large and also the loudest of them all. A system of “snares,” or tiny wires, in the bottom drum head is what gives the drum its harsh and loud sound. Almost all kits have three tom drums. One is mounted on a stand that stands on the floor and two more, a medium and a high tom, mounted on the set. Every user-friendly and authentic electric drum kit will have all of these drums to make your drumming experience complete.

Drum Heads and Thrones

Most of the time, the drum heads will be included in the sets that you buy. The head that you strike, or the top head, is also known as a batter head. The one at the bottom is known as the resonant head. There’s a system of “lugs” that go around the drum to tune the heads.

There are also the bass drum pedals that are used to play the “kick” or bass drum. You can find it in two varieties, single and double. If you’re a beginner, it’s always a good idea to start with a single pedal. The throne is another name for your seat. It should be comfortable, adjustable and allow you to set the whole kit around you.

Drumsticks and Brushes

The drumsticks are an essential component of the whole kit and how the drums sound. They can be made of different types of wood and come in several sizes. The stick’s size and its tip are what make the biggest difference in the sound the stick produces. Brushes are sticks with metal or plastic brushes on the end that resemble fans. These make a much quieter, gentler sound compared to regular sticks.

What to Consider When Buying

Module

The module is the most important part of the kit. It’s where the sounds of the drums get processed. It also holds the special effects, sounds of other instruments and the prerecorded sounds. You can also use it to adjust the settings and generate audio files so you can edit them on your computer later.

The module will also contain a few preset drum kits that play different music styles. There’s an option of customising a kit of your own. As a beginner, you shouldn’t go for the best module. They’re usually very complicated and their complexity won’t make your drumming fun. If you want to record your sessions, get a module with a USB port that will send your audio into interfaces.

Triggers

The two primary components of the electric drum kit are mesh heads and triggers. Triggers detect impacts on the mesh head and send signals to the module, which plays the suitable recorded sounds. It’s a good idea to have triggers with several sensors because one sensor triggers only one sound.

Cymbal

In general, the cymbals in an electric set are the same as the ones in the acoustic set. However, in some cases, the electric cymbals are just one part of the acoustic cymbals. High-end versions even include cymbals that move like the acoustic ones. Always choose the set that has multiple cymbal triggers. This means more playability and a nicer, more realistic playing experience.

Mesh Heads

This is the part of the electric drum kit that serves as the drumhead. It has evolved a lot and it’s now a rubber pad instead of a Formica tabletop. It also has a mesh head. These heads give you a nice bounce.

Practical Accessories

Amplifier

source: pinterest.com

An amplifier is a good accessory when you can’t plug into the sound system directly. Many of the newer models can be used with mobile phones, computers and other audio-playing devices. They have both AUX and Bluetooth inputs and a control knob. Amplifiers also have headphone outputs that allow you to play in private.

Bench

Some drum kits don’t come with a drum bench or a drum throne. In this case, you need to buy it separately. It’s important that you buy a highly adjustable one that’s also very comfortable. The seating area should be padded with a high-density sponge that’s supportive for your body. A rotating top with an adjustable height will allow you to move freely in any direction.

Headphones and Speakers

There are some dos and don’ts when you’re buying headphones or speakers for your drum set. You should always make sure they’re comfortable and not too tight over your head. Also, they shouldn’t be too loose so they fall off. Closed-back headphones will isolate any outside sounds and prevent them from interfering with your music. In-ear monitors are also a good option and sound great.

Don’t buy headphones with Bluetooth technology because it can cause a slight audio delay. Avoid cheap headphones because they won’t block external noise. If you’re keen on using speakers, make sure they have full-range support. It all depends on your personal preferences and you might have to try a few things before finding the right option for you.

If you’ve always dreamed of playing the double bass but felt unsure about where to start, you’re not alone. Finding the perfect instrument—your musical soulmate—requires careful consideration of your abilities, interests, and aspirations. With its deep, resonant tones and versatility, the double bass might be just the instrument to ignite your passion for music. With a little exploration and self-reflection, you can discover the ideal double bass that aligns with your skills and musical goals. Here’s a guide to help you find the one that resonates with your soul.

Explore Different Types of Double Basses

source: pinterest.com

When searching for the perfect double bass, start by exploring the variety of options available. Each type produces a unique sound, and understanding their characteristics can help you find one that complements your style.

For those drawn to warm, resonant tones, acoustic double basses are an excellent choice. A double bass instrument is widely used in jazz, classical, and contemporary music. Crafted from high-quality woods such as spruce (for the top) and maple (for the back, sides, and neck), acoustic double basses produce a rich, organic sound that enhances the depth of these genres.

If modern jazz or experimental styles are more your speed, consider the electric double bass. Sleek and innovative, these instruments feature built-in pickups, adjustable tone controls, and a contemporary design. The electric double bass offers outstanding sound clarity and dynamic tones, making it ideal for bold and creative performances.

It’s worth noting that not all double basses suit every player or genre. Some are tailored to the expressive nuances of classical music, while others excel in punchy, vibrant tones perfect for jazz or contemporary pieces. To make the right choice, reflect on the genres you’re passionate about and test different models to understand their tonal characteristics.

For a curated selection, consider purchasing from specialised music stores that stock high-quality double basses from reputable brands. For instance, you can find double bass instruments Australia-wide at stores known for exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. This ensures you select an instrument that perfectly matches your style, passion, and skill level.

Consider your Skill Level

When choosing a double bass, your current skill level plays a crucial role. For beginners, it’s best to opt for entry-level models that are affordable and easy to handle. These instruments often feature simpler designs, making the learning process smoother and more enjoyable.

If you’re an experienced player looking to refine your technique, consider investing in an advanced double bass. These models offer superior tonal quality and allow for experimentation with complex techniques and musical styles. Such instruments can elevate your playing to new heights, offering greater versatility and depth in your performances.

Align Your Choice with Your Musical Goals and Passion

Beyond skill level, think about your musical preferences and long-term aspirations when selecting a double bass. If your heart lies in classical music, an acoustic double bass is an excellent choice. Its rich, expressive tones are perfect for capturing the emotional depth and subtle nuances of classical compositions.

For those drawn to jazz or contemporary genres, an electric or upright double bass may be more suitable. These instruments are designed to complement improvisational styles and modern sounds, offering flexibility and dynamic tonal options.

Parents choosing a double bass for their child should also consider factors such as musical interests, temperament, and age. For younger children, smaller-sized models ensure comfort and ease of play, helping them develop their skills without unnecessary strain. If your child shows an interest in jazz or blues, introducing them to an electric double bass could spark their creativity and enthusiasm.

Unlike certain classical instruments, the double bass offers greater freedom for improvisation. This allows children (or players of any age) to express their emotions and creativity, forging a deep connection with the music they play.

Choose the Right Materials and Features

source: pinterest.com

The construction and materials of a double bass significantly impact its comfort and sound quality. Look for instruments made from lightweight, high-quality woods like spruce, maple, or laminated options for durability.

Additionally, consider the bow you’ll use with your double bass. A well-matched bow enhances playability and ensures the best sound production. Pay attention to the setup of the instrument, including the bridge, fingerboard, and strings. A properly set-up double bass will be easier to play and provide better tonal consistency.

Try Before You Buy

Finally, take the time to try different double basses before making a purchase. Visiting a music store allows you to feel the instrument’s weight, test its sound, and evaluate its comfort. A knowledgeable store assistant can guide you through the process, ensuring you select the perfect instrument.

If you’re shopping online, look for stores that offer detailed descriptions, photos, and even virtual consultations to help you make an informed decision. Many reputable stores in Australia also provide flexible return policies, giving you peace of mind when purchasing such an important instrument.

By following these steps and considering your unique musical journey, you’ll be well on your way to finding the double bass that’s truly your soulmate. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, the right instrument will inspire you to reach new heights in your musical endeavours.

There’s nothing worse than starting a new recording project just to find out that the sound is bad, don’t you think?! Creating content that the audience will enjoy and adore is closely related to the type of instruments you use, and one of them is the recording microphone. Whether you are a filmmaker, music maker or just a vlogger, having the right microphone can contribute to having a successful outcome. In other words, these tools can literally bring your project to life.

What Is a Recording Microphone?

As the name suggests, these mics are designed for recording, and they have proven great at capturing subtle audio details.

What Kind of Mic Is Good for Recording?

Nowadays, you can choose from several types of mics for recordings, all of them providing you with different benefits.

Dynamic

source: themusicfarm.com

These are considered the go-to recording microphones for studios because they aren’t that sensitive and can record different sounds. They can simply work wonders. They are quite an affordable option which is another reason why they are the most commonly used option in record studios. These mics are designed to convert any sound waves to an electric signal thanks to electromagnetic induction. The diaphragm within the capsule of this mic is linked to a conductive coil so when the sound hits to the diaphragm, it starts to vibrate. As a result, the coils start to move in a magnetic field and provide AC voltage.

It is said that these microphones produce rougher frequency response, however, this doesn’t mean that they aren’t okay for being used. In fact, they are perfect for being used in studios as they also won’t distort even when recording loud sources.

Considering the fact that this mic is less sensitive and more rough, this makes it perfect for being used outdoors when doing outdoor concerts, when having a conference or when giving an interview.

Condenser

This recording tool consists of a thin diaphragm that is placed near a metal backplate. Practice shows that these recording microphones are great for recording in the studio because they use capacitance instead of moving coils and this is great for having improved sound quality.

Generally, these mics have a wider frequency range of about 20Hz to 20 000 Hz, a sensitive and detailed sound and lower input sensitivity. When investing in a professional type of microphone of this kind, you should know that it can record both vocals and voice, as well as acoustic instruments.

Ribbon

It is said that this mic belongs to the dynamic types of mics, however, it is known as a separate one because of its sound and the way it works. The ribbon mic has an extended rectangular diaphragm which is made from thin aluminium and two magnets located at its ends, so once the sound gets to it, it vibrates and creates an electrical charge. A great number of these mics are considered to be bi-directional, but regardless of this, all types of ribbon mics are here to deliver a warm and smooth tone. They are delicate and are perfect for digital recording.

This mic can get detailed audio while rejecting any noise and off-axis sound. This makes them perfect for recording in any kind of cabinet and choirs in larger spaces. Thanks to their bi-directional feature, they can be used in both radio and TV shows as well as for podcasts.

Which Microphone to Choose for a Specific Instrument?

Before choosing anything, keep in mind that different instruments require different mics for recording.

Drums

source: joffwinks.com

Those of you playing on drums would probably benefit a lot from using dynamic mics. That’s because drums are loud and they need a mic that will match their intensity, noise and strength.

Vocal

If your special power is to sing, then you will probably benefit a lot from using ribbon and condenser mics. That’s because they are able to capture the vocal’s clarity and smoothness without a problem.

Acoustic Instruments

Given the fact that these instruments are sensitive, you should opt for a condenser mic because they seem ideal for capturing their warm and deep acoustic sounds.

Wind Instruments

These instruments are designed to produce more complex and highly sensitive sounds, so it is best if you use an all-rounder mic for the purpose. If possible, choose one that has a smaller diaphragm for better results.

String Instruments

String instruments like mandolin, violin, cello, and harp are perfect for being matched with condenser mics. Ideally, you should look for ones with small and large diaphragms.

Electric Guitar

In order to meet the instruments’ high sounds, it would be better to choose a dynamic mic for the purpose.

Bass

Practice shows that deep and heavy bass could be perfectly captured with dynamic mics. These mics seem perfect for capturing the deep and dark bass sounds.
